The Paul Burwell Memorial Scholarship

An award of $500 Sponsored by the Images Alberta Camera Club

Images Alberta Camera Club and the Burwell School of Photography are very pleased to have established a scholarship to encourage and support emerging photographic talent in Alberta. The IACC is a vibrant and active group of photographers and photo enthusiasts dedicated to creating images and sharing information. The first ever scholarship was awarded to Dennis Birkholz in 2021 and we are looking forward to awarding the 2022 "Paul Burwell Memorial Scholarship" to another deserving photographer. You may see some of Dennis' amazing photographs on our blog.


Qualifications


In order to be eligible to receive the scholarship, a student must be either:


  • currently enrolled as a Diploma Student at the Burwell School of Photography.
  • have completed their diploma within the past 3 years.
  • have completed a minimum of 5 classes at the Burwell School of Photography.


In order to receive the scholarship, a student must submit a portfolio with a minimum of 10 (ten) and a maximum of 30 (thirty) images along with a written statement. The written statement must include the applicants full name, contact information and a short biography. The biography may include any relevant and/or interesting information about the applicant and must include information regarding the applicants photographic interests . The written statement may include the applicants history with photography, past experiences, future goals and ambitions, photographic interests, personal interests, favorite subject matter, affiliations with camera clubs or professional organizations, philosophies regarding photography and any other information that may be relevant.

Applications are to be submitted electronically by email to the Burwell School of Photography at admin@bsop.ca. 

Portfolio Images must be in a jpeg format at a minimum resolution of at least 1800 Pixels on the long edge. Images can be submitted via email attachment or FTP (Dropbox, Google Drive, We Transfer, etc).



Selection of the Winning Applicant


If only one qualified student applies for the scholarship, then the award shall be given by acclamation.

If more than one student applies who is qualified for the award, then a selection committee of three persons shall be convened. The committee will be composed of one representative of the Burwell School of Photography and two representatives of the Images Alberta Camera Club. A winner shall be selected by majority vote after reviewing and discussing the merits of each application. The winning applicant will be informed in March 2024. Once the selection process is complete. The award will be presented in person by check at a meeting of the Images Alberta Camera Club. The winning applicant will be given an opportunity to give a short photographic presentation to the Images Alberta Camera Club at this meeting.


If you have the minimum course requirements, we strongly encourage you to apply for this award. The Burwell School will be very happy to offer you some guidance and assistance in preparing your application. We have all seen from the portfolio submissions that our graduates have submitted, that there are some amazingly qualified photographers associated with the Burwell School.

Paul Burwell

Founder of the Burwell School of Photography

Paul was a professional photographer, writer, educator and enthusiastic naturalist with over twenty years experience working with and educating adults. In addition to being the founder of the Burwell School of Photography, he was contributing editor and regular columnist with Outdoor Photography Canada Magazine. Paul has been a finalist in the Veolia ‘Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ worldwide competition in 2009, 2010 and 2013 and was named a ‘Top Wildlife Shooter’ by Popular Photography Magazine in 2010. Paul Burwell passed away suddenly from cancer in January 2016.

The Heritage Festival Scholarship

An award of $500 sponsored by the Edmonton Heritage Festival

The Burwell School of Photography is proud to partner with the Edmonton Heritage Festival to create a unique opportunity for our students. The Burwell School provides volunteers to photograph the Edmonton Heritage Days Festival. In appreciation of this valuable service, the Heritage Festival donates a scholarships to one of the festival volunteers. Heritage Festival Scholarships are awarded by random draw from the list of volunteers who have completed a shift at the festival.
